Furniture Maintenance
Furniture like anything else requires maintenance and regular cleaning to keep it looking good and to ensure it gives you years of pleasure. Protect your investment by following these helpful tips…
Veneer Furniture:
When cleaning veneer furniture, care must be taken as to prevent damaging or warping the wood. Veneer furniture is often already treated making it much easier to clean. In most cases using a dry cloth to clean untreated wood is preferable as to not soak the cloth with water which would seep into the grain and cause damage to the furniture. Wood treatment oils can be used to preserve and enhance the look of the wood however great care needs to be taken as to which brand or type is used for what veneer because this can cause marking and great damage to the wood, it is advised that if one is not able to consult with the manufacturer or the sales consultant on which is the best method then do a spot test in a discreet location beforehand.
Laminate Furniture:
All that is required to maintain your worktop is regular cleaning with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Stubborn marks can be removed with a cream cleaner, but you should never use harsh abrasive cleaners or abrasive scouring pads as these will damage the surface. Stains that are ingrained into the texture of the laminate can be effectively removed using a nylon bristle nailbrush however take care at all times as to not damage the furniture.
Upholstery:
Cleaning upholstery regularly will keep the furniture looking its best and can extend the lifespan of the furniture. Cleaning methods depend on the type of material, whether it is fabric, leather or vinyl. Vacuuming is one method for cleaning fabric as to remove dust and keep it to the minimum; if the fabric is removable one might opt to washing it but before doing so consult with the retailer as to how to do so. Furniture with vinyl can be cleaned using a damp cloth or with specific treatment products, to avoid colour fading or staining do a spot test in a discreet location for instance underneath to make sure the product does not damage the upholstery.
Cleaning of leather is necessary on a regular basis, whether it be with a leather feeder product or a cleansing treatment specifically for leather only, before using the product, do a spot test on a discreet area to avoid damage if it is in fact the incorrect product. Some prefer to buff the leather after using the products which helps to create an attractive shine.
